Mint-Ease soothing cream

Mint-EaseOk, so you might question whether a muscle-soothing cream is "gear", but as any keen athlete (whatever your ability) knows, muscle soreness is part of the game and a little light relief is very welcome at times!

Mint-Ease is a topically-applied cream made from 35% pure ethereal mint (surprisingly!) oil and is claimed to increase blood circulation, producing a 'deep and lasting warmth'.

The cream is designed to be used immediately pre and post exercise, as well as to fight Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) in the hours or days after a hard workout.

In use the cream has a strong, but not unpleasant, smell and was easy to spread onto the skin, absorbing quickly.  A few minutes after application you get the familiar warm/cold sensation in the affected area, which is quite nice and definitely feels like the muscles are being warmed in some way.

One note of caution - adhere both to the advice not to apply the cream to more than 25% of your body at one time, as well as avoiding application late at night as you are about to go to bed.  I did both and had a couple of sleepless nights (including waking up soaked in sweat)!

I've mostly been using Mint-Ease after hard track sessions, gym workouts or my longer runs.  As mentioned above, I can definitely feel that the muscles are being warmed and there is a temporary relief of soreness / aching.

Unfortunately, it's not a miracle cure (we can wish!) and it didn't completely relieve DOMS symptoms, but it definitely did feel like it was working. I was somewhat concerned about walking into the office followed by a strong waft of mint (of course there are far worse things to smell of!), so I haven't yet tried applying the cream every few hours in the day or so after a heavy gym set - this might produce better results in combatting DOMS.

I also haven't yet tried applying the cream before a session, but it makes sense that warmer muscles and joints will be more flexible and happy to get going - which could be useful for those early morning runs where my legs and ankles really don't want to know!

For some, the mint smell and non-tackiness of the cream alone will win points against some of the more established alternatives like 'deep heat'.  For others the natural ingredients will be attractive.

For me, I just enjoy the temporary relief it offers after a hard session - even if I still have some level of DOMS the next day.  It's good value too - two months in and I'm still only about half-way through my tube, so you're definitely getting your money's worth.
