(First of all, this is a long post, I apologise in advance!)

In case you hadn’t noticed (hard not to, what with my incessant Tweets and Facebook updates!), this weekend saw my first opportunity to don the Great Britain age group team trisuit and compete at the European Duathlon Championships in Limerick, Ireland.

After a cramped but bearable (and cost effective!) car / ferry journey to Limerick, we checked into the Maldron Hotel on the outskirts of Limerick (a great find by Rach – and very accommodating to three athletes arriving with a truck-load of kit) and got the bikes squared away.

We decided to take a quick shake down of the bikes to check the journey hadn’t affected the gears etc.  As we were leaving, I spotted my seat post had dropped a touch and made the decision to raise it back up.  Mistake.  Drama #1 ensued as we were unable to get my seat post bolt to hold and it kept slipping back down.  A little swearing and much brute force later, we did manage to get it tight and even took the risk of raising the seat 5mm or so (Mark had previously noted he thought I was too low on the bike).

It seems to have come around faster than I expected.  Come Thursday evening, coach Mark Shepherd, Rachael Elliott and I will be cramming three bikes (and God knows how many wheels), three bodies and minimal luggage into the beast that is the Orange Wonder (actually a Fiat Qubo - what Mark would describe as a 'proper' duathlete's car) and setting off down the M4 towards Fishguard.

One of the reasons I set up this website was to make public my goal of becoming a Great Britain Age Group triathlete. One the principles set out by Jason Selk in his book 10-Minute Toughness (thanks to Kim Ingleby for the recommendation) is that you are far more likely to continue striving towards your goals if you make them public.

So, it’s with no small amount of pride that I’ve confirmed my place on the Great Britain age group team for the upcoming European Duathlon championships in Limerick, Ireland on 17th April.  As someone who’d never raced a multisport event before November 2009, I hope my achievement also inspires others and shows what can be done with some hard work (I describe myself as having zero raw talent but 100% ambition).
