OK, so first off, apologies if this post gets a little long – there’s a lot to try to cram in! I’ll try to just focus on the race in this post and then do a separate one for the whole experience of being in China and watching both Alistair Brownlee and Helen Jenkins seal their world championships.

As I sit here and write, I can’t help thinking that in exactly one week’s time I will be in a slim metal tube, somewhere over Eastern Europe or Asia, trying not to inhale any germs from my fellow passengers as I make my way from London Heathrow to Beijing Capital International Airport en route to the biggest race of my life so far.

It feels like ages since my last blog update.  In fact it’s only nine days or so, but I guess that just illustrates the immediacy of social media and the web!

I toyed with the idea in the days after my last race (Marlborough, my first AG win) with a follow-up post entitled ‘Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea!’.  The truth is that I spent the next three days after the race in a lot of pain and could hardly walk.

Well. This was nearly the race that wasn't. Having qualified for Beijing at last week's Speedy Beaver, it was tempting to say 'job done' and give Shropshire (an Olympic distance ITU qualifier, rather than sprint like Eton and Speedy) a miss.  Having already raced two weeks running, there was half a thought to give my body a rest in the lead up to Dambuster on 18th June.

Well, I can't deny, it's been a fantastic few weeks.  Despite not really feeling like I performed to 100% of my ability, I have scraped onto the Great Britain Age Group team for the sprint triathlon world champs in Beijing in September.  And I've accepted a new job!
