I'm painfully aware that some readers of my blog may wonder what the hell a guy with a mere 18 months of Triathlon training under his belt is doing offering advice to the wider world.  Surely there are a lot of more qualified 'experts' out there offering a more valid view?

Well, yes, and if I come across as a know-it-all I apologise! That's not my intention at all.  If anything, a lot of my blog posts are actually a method for reminding myself of training and racing principles that will benefit me as much as you - I find the process of writing my thoughts down actually forces them into my brain.

And so it was this week that I had a bit of a re-revelation.  Why a "re"-revelation?  Well, because I already knew and trusted the theory - but for various reasons I had chosen to ignore it for a while.   This week it was time to get back on the wagon.

I was casting around for ideas for my next blog post when my coach (twitter: @gobi_one) suggested I explore the concept of pain. No surprise to hear that suggestion from a coach, perhaps. After all, they must enjoy creating pain; why else would they be coaches?!

But his point makes sense; what have I learned in the last six months of training that has altered my views on different types of pain and how have I reacted to that both physically and mentally?

So, last time out I wrote about getting myself a coach for the first time and having to learn to trust in that relationship. I also wrote about my introduction to the concept of winter base training. Well, one month in and I'd have to say things are showing signs of promise.

At the end of my first full season of Triathlon, I'm the first to admit that my training over the last 14 months or so has lacked any real scientific or programmatic basis. Put (perhaps a little over) simply, I mainly concentrated on doing either a) what seemed to feel right, b) what I felt needed the most attention or c) fitting in with other people's training plans (hey, at least they had a 'plan'!). And given that I came to Triathlon without any proven track record in swimming, cycling or running, this 'seat of the pants' approach to training hasn't been all that bad, with some reasonably good performances recorded in 2010.
