It hasn’t exactly been your average week in terms of training and racing. Last Sunday I kicked off a new strength and conditioning combined with nutrition program with Simon De Burgh.  Just like the plan, the reason for working with Simon is twofold – 1. I suspect that a weak(er than ideal) core is slowing me down on the run and swim and 2. I know I’ve not been eating very well lately, too much junk and convenience and not enough focus on the basics or indeed the nutrients I need for endurance training.

As any of you that follow me on Twitter will know, training has been going well lately, especially running. Although barely out of winter base training, and with my focus firmly on the Wokingham Half Marathon in mid-February, I’ve been feeling stronger on the shorter sprints. This has been witnessed by a few challenging runs at the Bristol Parkrun, which have seen my times tumble from 20:14 down to 19:27. It seems to be generally accepted that Bristol is a ‘slow’ course, worth a good 40-60 seconds over a ‘fast’ parkrun course.

Last weekend I made a breakthrough; one that was a long time coming and one frankly at times I felt I’d never achieve. OK, so in the grand scheme of things going sub-19 minutes for a 5km running race isn’t all that ground-breaking, people do it every week. But for a triathlete who started off barely being able to run a 23-minute 5km 18 months ago, it was a pivotal moment.
