Just five days to go till the first 'proper' race of 2011 - the Dambuster Duathlon at Rutland Water.  I've been to the venue three times already in 2010, but never actually raced it myself so this is kind of familiar-yet-new territory to me.

The illness contracted en route to a recent business trip to the US hasn't been the best preparation but the worst of it now seems behind me.  It's slightly weird to be getting to the point where I want to be training hard again just in time for tapering ahead of Saturday's race.

I have to be realistic though and treat the race more as a course familiarisation and fitness test exercise.  With the run still my weakest discipline, the 10km start and 5km finish are going to be a slog no doubt.  As such, my goals for the weekend are based more on personal performance than overall positioning.  I haven't done a timed 10km run for a little while, so I will be interested to see what kind of time I can put down and then how much of a blast I can manage on the bike.  The second 5km will, I think, be a case of mere survival!

Having back-to-back meetings at work all week may even play to my advantage, deterring me from over-training and hopefully giving me a chance to be reasonably fresh on the day.

Matt Fisher runs - so it's all his fault! He pretends to be a triathlete, but really he is a husband, father and company VP. But he has raced for the GB Age Group squad a few times and is a two-times qualifier for the IM70.3 world champs
