So I’m back from dull and dreary Mallorca to the sunshine and warmth of a British summer. Yes, you do indeed detect a hint of sarcasm!

Coming home has been something of a shock to the system. Or maybe that’s not quite the right way of articulating it.  The fact is, I think I’m suffering from some kind of post-race blues.  I’d placed such a lot of emphasis on doing well in Mallorca that the sense of euphoria at crossing the line and smashing my sub-5 hour goal has now been replaced with a kind of emptiness.

I fully accept that writing material destined for public consumption from a position of (at least partial) ignorance is dangerous and usually best avoided. But having been party to a twitter conversation over the last few days, it got me thinking and inevitably that led me to start tapping away on the keyboard, if only to get my own views on the matter in order.

Is it really less than two weeks until my first big race of the season? Jeez, that came around quickly!

Nonetheless, it is indeed just under two weeks until Mallorca 70.3. At this point, I have stopped worrying about how fast I can swim, bike or run; stopped fretting about how many hours training I cram in each week; stopped concerning myself with how I’m going to last at least 4.5 hours of racing without needing a pee!

It has been a while since my last update, on something of a high after setting a new PB at the Salisbury 10-mile run race in early March. Since then both quite a lot and not very much(!) has happened.

When not pretending to be a triathlete, one of my ‘real world’ responsibilities is running marketing for a software company. In that role, I’m familiar with the economics of sponsorship: put simply, an organization speculates to accumulate. It spends money, gives away product (or whatever) in the hope that the ultimate result will be that people view the brand and its products more favorably and thus ultimately buy said products.
